State Championship

A Letter from the MCA Director

MARCH 27, 2023
Looking forward to this season’s schedule there is one change that has been a long time coming—it’s the All Team Finale. This event is unique in that it is the only time that all teams come together and race. Unfortunately the MCA has grown to a point that we can no longer host events with over 2700 student-athletes at a single venue on a single weekend. Field sizes are just too large. This is a great problem! But this does cause us to make a change.

In 2020, prior to COVID, we held a focus group to discuss the challenges and how to best accommodate our continued growth. The group was composed of coaches, parents, student-athletes and MCA staff. The outcome of the focus group was then reviewed by the head coaches. The following is the result.

Starting this season the All Team Finale will be rebranded to the State Championship. Riders in the top 100 for points will qualify to race. Riders will also need to have registered to compete in two or more races. See full details below.

We strive to continue to offer an opportunity for no drops, no tryouts—everyone that puts in the time gets to race. We’re happy to still provide a chance for all seniors to participate in state for a senior open race. Any rider that does not qualify to race in JV2, JV3 or Varsity will get to race in the senior open at state!

The State Championship is included for all riders that purchase the super pass. Those who do not purchase the superpass will have the ability to register, after they qualify.

General Information

Qualifications
The top 100 riders from each race category will qualify to race at the State Championship based off the individual point standings after the final regular season race. If a category is separated into division in the regular season (example: JV2, D2 Boys & JV2, D1 Boys), then each category/division combination will have its own qualification and race.

Riders must register for a minimum of 2 races in the series. Rain outs, if a rider is registered, count towards the two-race minimum. Riders who are unable to compete due to a documented medical condition are exempt.

There is no “roll down” for riders that do not race. There are no petitions/exceptions.

Senior Open
All seniors who do not otherwise qualify to race, will qualify to race in the Senior Open event. This will be a race that follows the same race distance as JV2, regardless of the category of the rider attending.

Separate men’s and women’s races will be held. Depending on field sizes, the Senior Open category may further be divided by division or other objective methods.

Call Ups
The standard call up rule will be used for all races, including the senior open. There are no multipliers used for the call ups in the senior open field.

Team Scoring
Team scoring will be calculated for all qualifying fields/racers. Points from the Senior Open are not used for the team scoring.

Season Points
Points earned for individuals and teams by qualifying race fields will be added to individual and team accumulative points for the season points champion.

Senior Open field results do not accrue points.

Key Definitions:

State Champion: The team or individual that wins the State Championship Race

Series Champion: The individual or team that wins the accumulative point series.

State Championship Q&A

To qualify for State Championship:
1) Riders must register for a minimum of 2 races in the series AND
2) Riders must be in the top 100 of their category. All girls categories automatically qualify for State, as do all 6th grade boys, 7th grade boys D2, and Varsity boys. The following boys categories have a qualification:
  • 7th grade boys D1
  • 8th grade boys D1 & D2
  • Freshman boys D1 & D2
  • JV2 boys D1 & D2
  • JV3 boys
OR
3) If you are a senior and do not qualify to race in JV2, JV3 or Varsity, then you may race the Senior Open.

An injured rider may waive the 2 race requirement, but not the points. They would need documentation of the medical condition in order to waive the 2 race requirement, but there is no adjustment to their points. Ask your coach about the waiver.

Yes, however since the qualification is based on points, it is unlikely that they will have the points to qualify.

If the rider was registered for the race, it counts as one they could have raced in for state qualifier purposes.

Overall series scoring for individuals is an average of the points earned in all the regular‐season races a student-athlete could have completed. Could have completed means all races a team was scheduled to take part in, and which were held. which is typically 4, except in cases of rainout. A rider has their points total divided by a possible 4 races, except in cases of rain out.

Rain outs, if a rider is registered, count towards this 2 race minimum. Example: a JV3 rider registered for Lake Rebecca and Spirit Mountain. This rider meets the 2 race minimum. Lake Rebecca was held, the rider scored points. Spirit Mountain was rained out, therefore this race isn’t counted in the point average. This rider has points from 1 race / 3 possible races. Their point tally will determine whether they qualify or not.

No, the points tally is not adjusted.

No.

As soon as possible after the results from the Whitetail race are finalized. Find the list on the Race Results page of our website.

No, there are no “roll-downs” of spots.

Yes, but it does not change the available places in their category.

No.

The standard call up rule will be used for all races, including the senior open. There are no multipliers used for the call ups in the senior open field.

There will be a special registration opportunity after qualification is announced.
